When you first get engaged, choosing your bridal party seems like one of the easiest decisions you’ll make.
You picture your favorite people standing beside you, smiling in photos, wearing beautiful dresses, and celebrating one of the happiest days of your life.
But then reality sets in.
Your fiancé has a different vision for the size of the wedding party. Your family has opinions about who should be included. Friends quietly wonder where they fit. Suddenly, a decision that seemed straightforward becomes surprisingly emotional.
I know because I lived it.
When I got engaged, I thought choosing my bridesmaids would be one of the easiest parts of wedding planning.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I Thought I Was Having Four Bridesmaids
Four bridesmaids.
Done.
Except my husband had a different vision.
He wanted eight or nine groomsmen.
Technically, wedding parties don’t have to match.
But I knew myself. I loved the symmetry. I envisioned equal numbers during the ceremony, balanced wedding photos, and a bridal party that simply felt cohesive.
At the same time, my mom encouraged me to include cousins and other family members because she thought a larger bridal party would look better in pictures.
I understood where everyone was coming from.
But something about that didn’t sit right with me.
I didn’t want women standing beside me simply to fill space.
Looking back, I realize I already understood something I couldn’t quite put into words yet.
Your bridal party isn’t decoration. It’s your support system.
That realization changed everything.
Your Bridesmaids Are With You Long Before the Wedding Day
As wedding planning began, I realized something I had never considered before.
Your bridesmaids aren’t just standing beside you during your ceremony.
They’re with you for months before your wedding.
They’re planning bridal showers.
They’re organizing the bachelorette trip.
They’re answering late-night texts.
They’re calming nerves.
They’re celebrating every milestone leading up to the wedding.
That’s when I realized another important lesson.
Not every woman in my bridal party was going to play the same role—and that was perfectly okay.
My sisters were always going to be my bridesmaids because they’re my sisters.
But I also knew they weren’t especially interested in planning bridal events.
My best friend absolutely would have been—but she lived in Atlanta. She didn’t know my Philadelphia friends, couldn’t easily organize local events, and wasn’t connected to the people who would actually be attending the bridal shower or bachelorette weekend.
I realized I needed someone who represented my current season of life.
Every Friendship Brings Something Different
One of my closest law school friends, Audrey, immediately came to mind.
She genuinely loves planning parties.
It’s simply who she is.
She also happened to be one of my closest friends in Philadelphia.
As I pictured the months ahead, I realized she wasn’t just someone I wanted standing beside me.
She was someone who would genuinely enjoy helping make those memories happen.
When I asked Audrey to be a bridesmaid, she started crying.
She later told me she’d always dreamed of being a bridesmaid but had never been asked before.
I’ll never forget that moment.
As brides, we often worry that we’re asking too much of people.
We worry about the expense.
The time.
The commitment.
But that experience reminded me that, for many women, being invited into someone’s wedding is an incredible honor.
It’s Okay If Your Plans Change
Originally, I was determined to keep my bridal party intentionally small.
But after asking Audrey, something shifted.
I realized there were other friends who had become just as important during this chapter of my life.
I had already explained to several of them that I planned to keep my bridal party small.
They completely understood.
But as my vision evolved, I realized I genuinely wanted them standing beside me.
The same thing happened with one of my closest friends from an earlier chapter of my career.
She had graciously accepted that I wasn’t planning to ask her.
Later, after my bridal party expanded, I realized it simply didn’t feel right to leave her out.
When I finally asked her, she admitted she’d secretly been a little sad not to be included.
That conversation stayed with me.
It reminded me just how meaningful these friendships really were.
Slowly…
Four became five.
Five became six.
Eventually…
Four became eight.
And although there were moments I questioned that decision, I would make it again in a heartbeat.
Bigger Bridal Parties Come With Bigger Lessons
A larger bridal party also came with something I hadn’t anticipated.
More personalities.
More opinions.
More logistics.
More group texts.
More planning.
There were moments when ideas didn’t align.
Some of my bridesmaids had known me since childhood.
Others knew me through law school.
Others knew me from work.
Each group knew a different version of me, so naturally they approached planning differently.
At one point, I even wondered if maybe I had made things unnecessarily complicated by expanding my bridal party.
Looking back, I don’t think the problem was having eight bridesmaids. The lesson was that larger bridal parties require leadership.
Your Maid of Honor Is More Than Your Closest Friend
One of the biggest lessons I learned had nothing to do with choosing bridesmaids.
It had everything to do with choosing my Maid of Honor.
A Maid of Honor isn’t simply your best friend.
She’s your leader.
She’s the person everyone naturally looks to when decisions need to be made.
At one point, my bridesmaids called me because they couldn’t agree on a bridal shower decision.
Instead of trying to manage everyone’s opinions myself, I simply said,
“I trust Kyle.”
“She’s my Maid of Honor, and I trust her judgment.”
That one sentence gave everyone clarity.
Every wedding is different.
Sometimes your sister is the perfect Maid of Honor.
Sometimes it’s your lifelong best friend.
Sometimes it’s someone else entirely.
What matters most isn’t tradition.
It’s choosing someone whose judgment you trust and making sure everyone knows she’s leading the team.
That doesn’t mean every decision belongs to the Maid of Honor.
It simply means everyone benefits when there’s a clear point person, especially as your bridal party grows.
How I Built My Bridesmaid Proposal Boxes
One thing I knew from the very beginning was that I didn’t want to give my bridesmaids a box full of trendy items they’d never use again.
Instead, I asked myself two simple questions before buying anything.
- Will they actually use this after my wedding?
- Does this feel personal to them?
1. Bridesmaid Proposal Box
I started with a beautiful bridesmaid proposal box that already included the elegant presentation. It gave me a polished foundation without having to buy separate boxes, ribbon, tissue paper, and filler.
From there, I personalized each box with gifts that reflected each bridesmaid’s personality and lifestyle.

We liked this because it already comes with the personalized bridesmaid stickers and perfectly sized ribbons for easy wrapping.

2. Crinkle Paper Filler
One of my favorite little details was filling each proposal box with crinkle paper instead of traditional tissue paper.
It may seem like a small thing, but it completely changed the presentation.
Because each box included several gifts, the crinkle paper created a soft base that kept everything neatly in place while also adding height and dimension. Instead of the items sliding around inside the box, I was able to arrange everything so that it looked beautiful the moment each bridesmaid lifted the lid.
It gave the entire proposal box a more polished, boutique feel—and for such an inexpensive detail, I thought it made a surprisingly big difference.

This crinkle paper will help make your gift fill elegant and can affordably help fill empty space in your gift boxes.

3. Personalized Travel Jewelry Case
This may have been my favorite gift in the entire proposal box.
Most of my bridesmaids were traveling throughout wedding season—whether it was for the bridal shower, bachelorette weekend, or the wedding itself—so I wanted to give them something they could use right away and continue using long after the wedding was over.
I chose personalized travel jewelry cases with each bridesmaid’s name printed on the top, which made them feel both practical and special. They were perfect for keeping necklaces from tangling, protecting earrings, and organizing rings while traveling.
Even better, they weren’t just useful for my wedding. They’re the kind of gift that gets tossed into a suitcase for future vacations, work trips, and weekend getaways for years to come.
For me, that was the goal:
A personalized keepsake that wouldn’t end up tucked away in a drawer after the wedding

We like this jewelry case because you can personalize it with your bridesmaid’s name and birth flower adding a thoughtful touch to the gift.

4. Personalized Wooden Hanger
I asked everyone to bring their personalized hanger on the wedding morning so we could hang their dresses for getting-ready photos.
Not only did it make for beautiful pictures, but afterward it became something practical they could continue using at home.
Bride to Baby Tip: If you’re ordering multiple personalized items from Etsy (like hangers, robes, or other bridesmaid gifts), don’t be afraid to message the seller before placing your order and ask if they offer a bulk discount.
The worst they can say is no.
But I was pleasantly surprised by how many shop owners were willing to offer a small discount—often around 10%—for larger orders. It only takes a minute to ask, and those savings can really add up when you’re buying gifts for several bridesmaids.

Personalized Wooden Hanger
We like this hanger because you have the option of several different wood colors and white to better match your wedding aesthetic. It also comes in kid sizes for your special flower girl.

5. Knot Stud Earrings
I chose simple knot stud earrings with a card that read, “I couldn’t tie the knot without you.”
Most of my bridesmaids are working professionals, so I intentionally picked something timeless that they could wear to work, out to dinner, or on date night—not just on my wedding day.

Knot Stud Earrings
We like these earrings because they are timeless in fashion just like the symbolic meaning behind the knot – a symbol of never-ending love with no beginning and no end – perfect to represent both your wedding and your friendship.

One Decision I’m Especially Glad I Made
One thing I didn’t do was make every proposal box identical.
For example, my Maid of Honor already owned a travel jewelry case.
Instead of giving her something she didn’t need, I chose a neutral Coach wristlet that better fit her lifestyle and that I knew she’d actually use.
Looking back, I think that’s one of my favorite decisions.
The goal wasn’t to create identical boxes.
The goal was to make every bridesmaid feel seen.
Thoughtfulness matters far more than perfect uniformity.
Looking Back
There was a point during wedding planning when I wondered if I’d made a mistake.
Eight bridesmaids felt like a lot.
There were more moving pieces.
More logistics.
More opinions.
But on the morning of my wedding, as I looked around the bridal suite, none of that mattered anymore.
I didn’t see eight bridesmaids.
I saw every chapter of my life standing beside me.
My sisters.
My lifelong best friend.
My law school friends.
Friends from my career.
Women who had shaped me in different ways and who were now helping me begin one of the biggest chapters of my life.
If I could leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this:
Don’t choose your bridal party based on how it will look in your wedding photos. Choose the women you want beside you when you’re nervous, excited, laughing, crying, and about to walk down the aisle.
Those are the moments you’ll remember long after the flowers have wilted.
And if your bridal party grows from four to eight along the way?
Don’t be afraid to let your heart—and your season of life—shape the decision.
After all, your wedding is only one day.
The friendships you celebrate there can last a lifetime.
